In physics, stress tensor is a mathematical quantity defined as a symmetric second-rank tensor that represents the total force on a material body. It is a fundamental quantity in continuum mechanics, which gives the stress and strain in a material body. It is derived from the Cauchy stress tensor, which describes the rate of change of strain in a material.

Stress tensor can also be used in engineering to obtain the stress field at a point in the domain and show the distribution of stress, strain and other physical quantities.

2D Stress Vector Viewer

The application presents the 2D stress tensor from the user’s point of view. The user can view the tensor in the window as a graphical representation of the 2D stress vector.

The application is intended to allow the user to inspect the stress tensor for any arbitrary angle. The user can rotate the stress vector as the angle varies by dragging the slider at the bottom of the window.

The user can also zoom in and zoom out the stress vector at any angle using the zoom in and zoom out buttons. By default, the application is set to zoom in or out by factors of 2. The user can zoom in or out to any factor. To exit the zoom in and zoom out, press the center button on the keyboard.

The application can be used for education purpose to learn more about the application. The user can use the application to understand the effects of various angles on the distribution of stress and other physical quantities. For example, the user can gradually increase the angle, beginning at zero, to view the state of stress at different angles.

Technical Features:

The application was implemented in.NET Framework 4.6.1 using C#. The application was developed using the WPF technology.

Design Goals:

The design goals for this application were as follows:

1) Ability to calculate and view the 2D stress tensor at any angle.

2) Ability to change the size of the displayed stress tensor.

3) Ability to zoom in and zoom out the displayed stress tensor.

4) Ability to change the color of the displayed stress tensor.

5) Ability to edit the displayed stress tensor.

6) Ability to save the displayed stress tensor to a file.

How the program works:

The application calculates the 2D stress tensor using the angle of theta. The angle is converted to polar coordinates, as shown in the figure below.

The user can change the angle by dragging the slider at the bottom of the window. This allows the user to change the angle and view the effect on the displayed stress vector.

The user can increase or decrease the angle by pressing the + and – buttons on the keyboard

System Requirements:

Designed for Microsoft Windows (7, 8, and 10) platforms. The Gamepad and Controller Guide installer works with any version of Windows, but for best performance, we recommend Windows 7 (32-bit), 8 (32-bit), and 10 (32-bit). A minimum system requirements for Mac and Linux is not yet available.

Requires installation of a Controller and/or Gamepad of your choice. Consult the Console and Controller Guide for the software installation and configuration instructions.
Requires an active internet connection during installation.
